How To Repair Stair Nosing

  1. Howdy,

Whilst removing an onetime bathtub months ago, the wooden nosing on one step of the staircase bankrupt off from one side.

What is the best way to fix this and is it a job for a DIYer (never worked with a staircase before)? If then, what is the procedure to carry it out?

I am getting carpet installed on the staircase soon so need to take this corrected before then.

I have attached a photograph for reference of the broken nosing.

  2. If it's a clean break, woods mucilage and lost head nail it
  3. Every bit higher up, if yous nonetheless have the piece? if not y'all will have to go a clean cut on the tread first earlier patching it dorsum in. non so bad as painted and carpeted so adequately easy.
  4. I would be tempted to remove the whole stair tread and supercede it - a google search for "bullnose stair tread" should turn upwards something suitable.
  5. Unfortunately the snapped off wood got chucked out a while agone.

Would it be a example of cutting to make information technology a clean cut along the length of the tread (one-half the depth of the riser), enough so I can mucilage and spiral a new nosing into the tread/riser?

  6. The easiest manner is to cut a clean line where the damage is and cut a wedge shaped piece to pin back in, you volition have to file, plane sand or by some means put the bend dorsum on the front of the wedge at to the lowest degree the outset couple of inches before pinning it in, white mucilage to both pieces before attaching. 7. The wedge shape referred to above needs to be cut so that you lot lock the new piece into the existing - so that it cannot pull out - rather than the other way round. Like a jigsaw slice cannot exist pulled out sideways.
  8. Aye, that is better, if tools available. making certain the other finish is wedged into the nosing housing in the stringer, enough of mucilage on all contacting faces.
